the disappointment machine

December 8, 2007

I hate my computer.  I hate my computer.  I am on my husband’s computer and though it is older and less fancy IT WORKS.

My computer has crashed for the FOURTH TIME.  I am currently trying to ressurect it.  How many times can you start from scratch?  You know what they say: ‘luck at love, unlucky with computers’ or something like that.

I had a  post to post.  It was my sandwich party post.  Oh woe, once again I have lost my photos and mp3s to the abyss created by that bastard machine.  If I had money to buy a new one I would be outside smashing my computer into the pavement.

Another disappointing thing?  Maybe coworkers who leave a lot of work unfinished.  It usually means one already tired girl will be on her feet all night struggling to do the impossible.

Bah.  I need a drink.

(I won’t have a drink.  It is  9a.m. and even though it is like some weird time of night for me after being up for two days….)

my son wants this computer back.

The frustration of a crashed computer is so distinctive. There’s nothing quite like it.

Not that it helps, but of course you’re welcome to post a sandwich party entry about the sandwich, the crashed computer, and the lost photos.

This is not likely to be a welcome comment, but it is constructive to view computers as things which are not just susceptible, not merely likely, but indeed CERTAIN to crash, no more apt than a kite to stay up indefinitely. Once you accept this bitter truth, you will be better able to deal with the inevitability of bitter disappointment, and less likely to lose anything serious in the course of experiencing it.

We once got a group together and shot to pieces a computer that wouldn’t work right. Well, actually it was a printer, but it’s the same thing.

I am learning not to trust that thing. It is sitting on my kitchen table right now. I am re-installing drivers (like the fifth time in a month).

The shooting thing sounds great. The moment that I can afford me one of those new and more reliable ibooks I am going to take part in some sort of act of destruction.

    Thanks!
