wind, sleep, amusement
April 2, 2008
50 mph winds? That is what the weather guy is telling us this morning. I was very groggy and whiny this morning and was telling my husband that I didn’t believe it (I have lost my faith in meteorology) but then watched a trash can blow by, level with our second story window. Oh.
I don’t really feel like braving the wind (and now I will imagine that is truly catastrophic wind, even if it is not) so I think we will just hang around here today. I am so tired. Maybe I will have a nap! A nap? I cannot wait (but I must).
So I noticed that my blog is getting a decent amount of hits. This makes me happy! Mostly lurkers, I imagine- but that does not bother me. I will, however, be updating my blogroll today so: if you want to be listed just leave a comment!
And do this! Answer some questions in the comments. It will be fun!! I want to be amused by other people’s answers today. My son is preoccupied with small boy business and I am really not in the mood to do housewife-y stuff all day. Indulge me! Take a minute and do my list-y thing!
I will go first (and bore people with things they already know about me).
If you don’t give me any answers then you are no fun!!!
Favorite day of the year: Halloween! But I am not goth, right? I just love fall and dressing up and walking around in the dark!
Favorite song TODAY: Kronos Quartet- White Man Sleeps #1 (From White Man Sleeps). I just listened to it a few minutes ago and noted that it made sense with today, the wind… it gets this slot today.
Favorite food: sweet curry. I wish I could say spicy, but I can’t. This is like a metaphor for my life, you know? I wish I could say I was spicy rather than sweet.
Last movie watched: “The Devil and Daniel Webster” or “The Shortcut to Happiness” and, uhm, this says nothing about me. Nothing. I saw it and watched it and it was something to do.
Book currently reading: “The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon”, Richard Zimler. I am about 20 pages in.
Something you plan to do today: Clean a few drawers. Stir fry a little tofu and cabbage. It is going to be an exciting day!
Something you regret today: Two cups of coffee.
Three guilty pleasures you are willing to share (this is the fun one):
-Greasy, cheap, chinese food. I eat it like twice a year, but the guilt and the pleasure is there every second of the experience
-Listening to Smashing Pumpkins “Bodies” when I am alone in the car and remembering what it was like to be 19. I do this and now the world knows!!! When my husband talks about bands, well that band, I act like I give him a sort of judgmental lack of feedback.
-1.00 nail polish in garish colors from the grocery store/drug store. I keep it in a separate bag in the bathroom and wear it in crazy rotations in the summer. I keep a few pricier bottles in the cabinet AS IF I AM A PERSON WHO CARES.
So there… my answers… come on!! I know you want to!!!!!!
Fav. Day: Actually, 1st day of October. I like Fall, but I don’t like cold Fall.
Fav. Song Today: ‘It’s Not Unusual’ – Tom Jones. This is currently competing with Ok Go for ‘Earworm of the Day.’ It’s my favorite because it’s losing.
Fav. Food: Right now, it’s Giant Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs. I could eat ten in a row, no joke, and want another five.
Last Movie Watched: Umm…Damien: Omen II. Don’t judge me! There’s a box set involved. It’s not quality, but it does feature Meshach Taylor in a small supporting role. Also, Sylvia Sidney, who is #11 on my list of favorite character actresses.
Book currently reading: I have about five going – a paperback copy of Tennyson’s Idylls of the King, a book of Victorian Ghost Stories, a book of children’s stories, Daniel Handler’s Adverbs, and the creative writing book. It’s getting kind of crowded in my head.
Something I Plan to Do Today: Fantasize about a job that isn’t overrun by feuding 40-something ladies. Sit through the dumbest meeting I’ll ever attend. Floss.
Something you regret today: I haven’t been up long enough to regret anything, I regret to say.
Three Guilty Pleasures:
(1) Singing by myself in the car. Current fan favorite: ELO, because in the driver’s seat of a Ford Focus, I sound just like Jeff Lynne.
(2) Collecting stationery and office supplies. I have a drawer full of empty or lightly used notebooks I bought myself because I ‘needed’ them. Also, I unintentionally steal pens. I am never without at least four pens.
(3) Being the person who gets to open something new. I get ridiculously happy when I run out of Post-It notes at work, for example, because I get to tear the plastic off a new set. I like to open boxes, too. And envelopes. Really, anything. I am very easily entertained.
Favorite day of the year:
April Fools’ Day. Not because I tend to do anything exciting with it, but the idea of a day set aside for pranks and funnin’ sustains me. In 1998 my roommate and I convinced my mother that we’d been kicked out of the dorms for keeping alcohol in our fridge. It was great!
Favorite song TODAY: Because I heard it five minutes ago for the first time, it’s New Christy Minstrels’ “Everybody Loves Saturday Night.”
Favorite food: this used to be an easy question. I still like blueberries a lot. Though I’ve been putting flax seed in lots of irrelevant meals lately (I just read “The Abs Diet” – borrow it from me!), and I appreciate the way it almost flavorlessly nourishes me. It’s a toss up.
Last movie watched: I watched “I Think I Love My Wife,” since we decided that HBO was a more logical splurge than Netflix. It was fairly decent.
Book currently reading: I’m reading about two pages per week of “The Feast of Love.” In five weeks, I’ll get back to pleasure reading with reckless abandon.
Something you plan to do today: I plan to take two tests and hand in a paper, then take the bus home, eat something sprinkled with flax seed, watch 30 Rock and last night’s ANTM, then go to bed. Exciting stuff.
Something you regret today: Not going to the bathroom before coming to campus.
Three guilty pleasures you are willing to share (this is the fun one):
1) Oregon Trail in Facebook. It’s not really that great, but I’ve wasted A LOT of time with it.
2) Dancing With the Stars! I never watched it before, and for the love of God I don’t know what took me so long. Other seasons didn’t have Steve Guttenberg, so that helped. But it’s goofy and fun and a thousand times more awesome than American Idol.
3) Plotting every possible driving route to random locations. When we went to Troy to see John Prine in January, I spent an entire day beforehand configuring four or five different routes. I could make and market TripTiks – give AAA a run for their money.
You are brave heroes, Jim and Annie. I had about 35 hits since I put this up and only two takers? This confirms my fears: my parents and my coworkers are secretly reading my blog and calling each other up and mocking me!
Was Meshach Taylor on Tour of Duty?
Annie: That was a great prank. I tried to convince my mother I was pregnant when I was like 22 and get this, she was HAPPY. That joke totally backfired on me.
Re: Meshach Taylor – Even better. He was on Designing Women. And in both Mannequin and Mannequin II: On the Move.
Ooooh. Same time period-ish. I get the ‘mens names I saw on the credits when I was younger’ all jumbled. I always get the women right, though. Annie Potts? Dixie Carter? Delta Burke? That blonde one who is on a million sitcoms but I am too tired to remember the name of (who I thought was Kim Catrall once)… it is too early for me to be commenting on my own blog. Jean Smart! …and that guy they were always nagging.. yeah! Now I have no idea who was in “Tour of Duty”. Just the theme song.
I’m putting my responses on macbebekin.
Favorite day of the year: I love my birthday…celebrating another year of life with the people I enjoy the most.
Favorite song TODAY: Hard to say, but I have Meat Beat Manifesto on repeat today and “Acid Again” is rockin’ my world.
Favorite food: Salsa and chips (at the moment!)
Last movie watched: It would have been “Aladdin” which my son had not yet seen.
Book currently reading: Woefully, I barely ever get through books, but I’m trying Rise of the Monkey Lord by Jay Smith at the moment.
Something you plan to do today: Get through the workday, go home and watch The Sarah Jane Chronicles.
Something you regret today: Not calling in!
Three guilty pleasures you are willing to share (this is the fun one):
1. The cheeseball trainwreck that is American Idol!
2. A tendency to overindulge when eating Mexican food, and
3. I don’t think I have a third one. I rarely feel guilty over my pleasure!
It is probably really healthy to feel pleasure without guilt.
I want an enchilada. Maybe some chile rellenos.
Thanks for answering the questions!
